When Cali called me one morning to ask if I could photograph a Winter Park surprise proposal for her partner, Sam, I said yes right away. I first met these two doing studio work for their business, VesperTwine, Cali’s shop of block printed apparel and art. So I already knew how sweet and creative they were together.

Planning a Winter Park surprise proposal on Labor Day
We picked the afternoon of Labor Day. The sky rolled in thick and gray, and at first I watched the forecast a little nervously. Still, it ended up being perfect! Overcast light is soft and even, so nobody squints and everyone glows.
The moment at my favorite little fountain
We met at one of my favorite little fountains, right across the street from Casa Feliz. Then Cali tucked the ring box on the ledge and sat down with Sam. Meanwhile, I stayed back and let it unfold. Sam’s laugh when she realized what was happening is one of my favorite things I have ever captured. Next came happy tears, a spinning hug and plenty of ring admiring.
Celebrating after the Winter Park surprise proposal
After the yes, we walked along Park Avenue for more photos. Cali shed her leather jacket, and we wandered under the oaks on the brick streets. Later, we found a clean gray wall and a pink building that matched their playful style. These two laughed the entire time, and it shows in every frame.
Why I love photographing proposals
Proposals move fast, so you only get one shot at the real moment. Every Winter Park surprise proposal I photograph reminds me how much trust goes into those few seconds. If you are planning one, I love helping with the secret plans.
Cali and Sam, congratulations! Finally, thank you for trusting me with such a special afternoon.
