This “my time as a KWP intern” blog has been pretty difficult to write. It’s not because it’s hard or anything, I just don’t know where to start. I learned SO much and had a lot of fun along the way as well. This photography internship has definitely changed me for the better and I’m so grateful for the KWP team.
From finding out I got accepted as a KWP intern to day one I was so nervous to actually start. I didn’t know anything about marketing or business. I only had moderate knowledge about photography but I still didn’t feel like I was qualified enough. After meeting Kristen, she made me feel so much more comfortable. She didn’t expect us to have all the experience in the world. This photography internship was about teaching us the basics and what she was never taught in college.
The Kittens
The kittens is the name we chose as a group for ourselves. Every year the interns decide a name for themselves along with a saying. So we decided that we would be the Kittens and that the KWP team would be the cool cats (; (If you don’t know, It’s a Tiger King reference) We all agreed it would be fitting for us as a group!
Throughout the course of the internship there were multiple assignments where we’d have to work together on and we all grew close pretty quickly! Hannah and Tori are both SO fun and I’m so grateful that I got the opportunity to get to know them! I’m super grateful for this photography internship as a whole for all the amazing people I’ve met.
Film Shoot
As one of our first photo assignments we got the choice to do a film shoot or to direct a beauty shoot in the studio. I opted for the film shoot because I wanted to get the experience and see how to shoot with film. In the end, it turned out great but it was definitely nerve-wrecking. I’m used to taking the photos and seeing the result right away. With film, you obviously don’t get that luxury. After shooting, I had to send the film roll off to a lab so they can process it. Kristen then taught us how to fill out the form and what all the terms meant, it was super helpful! I’ll be shooting film again, that’s for sure. Thanks to Kristen and this photography internship I now know how to!!
Macro Shoot
Another photo assignment we were given was to do some sort of product photography. I chose to do a clean and minimal gold jewelry shoot. I learned how to do the setup, the lighting, and stage the products! This shoot I think was my favorite out of all of them. Product photography is something I found out that I really enjoy!! So i’m very grateful for the experience.
Owner and Pet Shoot
Okay maybe I lied, THIS shoot was my favorite. I assisted Kristen with two different photo sessions with couples and their pets. I love animals and it is so neat seeing how Kristen posed the couples and their pets. As the designated attention grabber for the animals, I used squeaky toys, treats and made crazy whistling sounds. So, for my shoot I decided to ask my friend and her boxer Boomer. The shoot was hilarious, I of course got to shoot the one dog who has the biggest selective hearing and attention ever!! But, I was able to get a lot of cute photos of the the two of them and I was really happy with the outcome!
Wedding Assist for Kristen
I got to assist my first wedding with Kristen! It was at The Lake Mary Events Center on a beautiful lake. It was a great experience for me as a KWP intern to see what exactly goes into shooting a wedding! I believe it was about an eight hour wedding and my feet definitely hated me the next day, but everything turned out so beautiful. It was so fun being able to help Kristen with everything. In one shot in specific Kristen wanted the veil to look like it was blowing in the wind so I had to toss the veil and try to get out of the shot as fast as I could so we got some very lovely shots of myself making absolutely crazy faces.
After the day was done, I was exhausted to say the least. But, the experience and knowledge from that day will stick with me for the future! You can check out more from this wedding here: Classic Black & White Wedding for Childhood Best Friends
Final Project
I’m only going to briefly talk about my styled shoot since we have a whole other blog post going into depth about it. If you were interested in reading it, it’s called Meet Me in Modesto. Anyways, the planning of the shoot was intense. It’s 100% the most difficult project we had to do and pinterest is a literal lifesaver. The shoot ended up coming out amazing, and I now use pinterest for literally everything!
The End
As my KWP internship comes to a close, I’ve learned so much more than what I wrote about, I’d be here writing this blog for weeks about all of the information I learned. As a newer amateur photographer there is so much I didn’t know about the business aspect, marketing, finances, studio photography, and so much more. So everything I learned will stick with me forever because it’s helped make me a better photographer and I am a lot more confident in myself as a photographer.
