Don’t worry, I’m not going to start some weekly random post.

I just wanted to get some thoughts in order – and it helps me to write them down. The past few weeks have had a ton of {FIRSTS} for me, and I wanted to share them with you!

Bye Bye Job

2 Months ago, I was laid off (thanks, economy) and had my {FIRST} chance to be a full time photographer. Something I’ve always wanted to do – but was just scared to try. Obviously, the economy isn’t as happy as it used to be, and I know people aren’t putting a whole lot of value into photography. But trust me when I tell you that photographers are insanely hard working – and no, it’s not something anyone with a digital camera can step in and do. 70% of what makes me the photographer I am, is my ability to edit post-production. It’s just as important as knowing how to use your camera. I put a lot of work in to my photography, and a lot of time. My family often sacrifices for me, for my passion. They support me, and love me – and I’m so lucky to have them.

If you ever doubt the amount of work, time and money that it takes to be a successful photographer, read this awesome post:

Images for a Cure

images-for-cure-buttonI started Images for a Cure about a month ago. I had no expectations – I just knew that I wanted to give photographers a vessel to give back to their families and friends who have been affected by Breast Cancer. Among the popularity of the event, I am so pleased to share with everyone how excited I am about what’s been going on! We currently have  124 photographers from 37 states and 3 countries (US, Canada and UK). We have raised $2115, but we still have a long way to go! We have 12 sponsors (giving away some amazing things) and lots of activity on the IFaC blog!

I also just participated in my very {FIRST} podcasts for ShootCast and Tech Talk! I’ll be posting those links as soon as they’re up! I can’t wait to share!

Please take a few minutes to help us spread the word on this fantastic event! http://www.imagesforacure.com.

And check out this awesome feature of Images for a Cure courtesy of OneWed.com!

Charity Auctions

I’m participating in 2 charity auctions, too! Another {FIRST} – well, and second I guess! A good friend of mine (actually a funny story, she’s my ex-boyfriend’s big sister) is hosting an event “SOCK FIP” and I’m giving away a great portrait package for her silent auction (plus, it gets me out to San Francisco/Napa for the session… I can’t wait!).

Save Our Cats and Kittens from Feline Infectious Peritonitis is a great organization and the auction is donating all proceeds to FIP research at UC Davis to aid the next generation of cats and kittens.  The event is an afternoon of jazz on the vineyard in Glen Ellen, CA. “Meows, Music and Merlot”… I wish I lived closer! I’d LOVE to attend this one, but it’s on October 11, 2009 (my Images for a Cure event date).

I’ll also be doing the Junior Service League of Bartow’s Boots and Pearls Dinner Auction 2009. All of the proceeds from this event are going back to the Bartow community. Their event is on October 23, 2009 and you can purchase tickets from www.jslbartow.com. Tickets are $30, or $50 per couple, and include a steak dinner, auction and drinks!

Rangefinder Magazine : Unsung Heroes Contest

unsungheroesI’ve never been featured in any magazines, so it was an amazing surprise to learn that a couple of photographers on my Facebook page nominated me for Rangefinder Magazine’s Unsung Heroes feature for my work with Images for a Cure! That’s definitely a {FIRST}! What a humbling experience this whole thing has been for me. This has definitely been a dream of mine to be included in this amazing magazine – so thank you for your support! If you have time (and think of me as “undiscovered talent” and think I “give back”) just go here and enter:

I’ve seen a lot of photographers that are definitely worthy of this honor, so I’m hoping that some of my IFaC participants can get some nominations and help us spread the word!

Bridal Blog Features

hotpinkbridesAfter my wedding with Tina and Evan, I got a minor little blog mention on the Wedding Chicks to promote their Real Weddings section of their blog. But just last week, I was contacted for my {FIRST} Bridal Blog feature (ever!) for Hot Pink Brides, along side the genius of Jose Villa, Jessica Claire and Jasmine Star. I’m so not kidding. I’m not sure how I fit in with those fantastic photographers, but Hollie and Lance’s Couples session was a blast to shoot and edit – so I’m honored to have that recognition.

Rumor has it, there’s another bridal blog featuring Susan and Matt’s Winter Park Wedding today! So I’ll post that as soon as I see it!

A Wish List

Part of being a photographer is having the equipment you want. I have this document on my desktop of wishlist items that I must possess asap!

Nikon D700
85mm 1.4
70-200mm 2.8 (I know, WHY don’t I already own this?)

WPCF Bridal Show

I also got to participate in my {FIRST} Bridal Show with WPCF (Wedding Professionals of Central Florida). I had an awesome time out there and was so glad to get this opportunity.

I’m working on editing all the images from the show, but here’s my blog post about the event!

Vacation!

So why is this a {FIRST}? Well, in the 3 years that Anthony and I have been together, the kids have never come home to Ohio with us. We’ll be staying for a long weekend to introduce them to family, the Fruit Farm and Handels. I can’t wait!

I have been busier than ever, and I am loving have these opportunities to work with so many wonderful people. Thanks to everyone who has been so supportive during these tough times and encouraged me to continue to follow my heart.
